This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but within Together resides a profound meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when the couple transition from the metropolis to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple face the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
