Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors around that, not just his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
