Larian Studios Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The anticipation about The Game Awards has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team could be crafting a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
